Metadata Embedding Explained: EXIF, XMP & IPTC for Stock Photography

· · 9 min read · Metadata Tips

What Is Metadata Embedding?

When you submit photos to stock platforms, you typically enter titles, keywords, and descriptions through their web interface. But there is a better way: embedding metadata directly into the image file itself.

Embedded metadata travels with the file. No matter where the image goes — uploaded to a platform, shared via email, or stored on a hard drive — the metadata stays attached. This is critical for stock photographers who submit to multiple platforms.

The Three Metadata Standards

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format)

EXIF was originally designed for camera data — shutter speed, aperture, ISO, GPS coordinates. But it also supports:

  • ImageDescription — Used for titles
  • UserComment — Additional descriptions
  • Rating — Star ratings (1-5)
  • PixCraftAI embeds: Title in ImageDescription, star ratings via percentage-based mapping compatible with Windows Explorer.

    IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council)

IPTC is the standard used by news agencies and stock platforms for editorial metadata:

  • Headline — Short title
  • Caption/Description — Detailed description
  • Keywords — Subject keywords (the most important field for stock)
  • Creator — Photographer name
  • Copyright — Rights information
  • PixCraftAI embeds: Title, description, and all keywords in IPTC fields.

    XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform)

Adobe created XMP as a modern, extensible metadata standard:

  • dc:title — Dublin Core title
  • dc:description — Detailed description
  • dc:subject — Keywords array
  • xmp:Rating — Star rating
  • photoshop:Instructions — Special instructions
  • PixCraftAI embeds: Full metadata in XMP format, including star ratings and category information.

Why Embedding Matters for Stock Photographers

    Multi-Platform Efficiency

If you sell on Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, Freepik, and 123RF, you would normally enter metadata four times. With embedded metadata, you enter it once and it is automatically read by every platform during upload.

    Consistency

Manually entering metadata on each platform introduces errors — typos, missing keywords, inconsistent descriptions. Embedded metadata ensures identical, consistent data everywhere.

    Time Savings

For a library of 500 images across 4 platforms, you would normally write metadata 2,000 times. With embedding, you write it 500 times. That is a 75% time reduction.

    Backup Protection

If a platform loses your metadata (it happens), embedded metadata survives in the file itself. Your keywords are never lost.

    How PixCraftAI Handles Embedding

For JPG, PNG, and WebP Files

PixCraftAI offers a one-click Embed button that writes metadata directly into your image file:

  • Generate metadata using AI analysis
  • Click Embed on individual images or Embed All for batch processing
  • Download the file — metadata is now permanently embedded
  • Upload to any stock platform — metadata auto-populates
  • For EPS and AI Files

Vector files use XMP metadata in a different way. PixCraftAI generates an Adobe Illustrator ExtendScript (.jsx) that you run in Illustrator:

  • Generate metadata for your EPS/AI files
  • Download the .jsx script
  • Open your file in Adobe Illustrator
  • Run the script (File > Scripts > Other Script)
  • Save — XMP metadata is now embedded in the vector file
  • Star Ratings

PixCraftAI supports embedding 1-5 star ratings that are compatible with:

  • Windows Explorer file properties
  • Adobe Bridge
  • Adobe Lightroom
  • Stock platform quality indicators
  • The rating uses percentage-based EXIF mapping (1 star = 1%, 2 stars = 25%, 3 stars = 50%, 4 stars = 75%, 5 stars = 99%) for maximum compatibility.

    Best Practices for Metadata Embedding

  • Always embed before uploading — Make it part of your workflow
  • Use all three standards — EXIF + IPTC + XMP covers all platforms
  • Keep keywords consistent — Same keywords embedded = same keywords everywhere
  • Include star ratings — Helps organize your library and signals quality
  • Batch embed — Use PixCraftAI Embed All feature for entire collections
  • Verify after embedding — Check with ExifTool or Adobe Bridge that metadata is correctly written
  • The Complete PixCraftAI Metadata Workflow

  • Upload images (JPG, PNG, WebP, EPS, AI, SVG, or video)
  • AI generates optimized metadata (title, 25-35 keywords, description)
  • Review and customize — Edit any generated metadata
  • Embed metadata — One-click for raster files, .jsx script for vectors
  • Download — Files with metadata already embedded
  • Upload to platforms — Metadata auto-populates on every platform
  • This end-to-end workflow makes PixCraftAI the most complete metadata solution for stock photographers and vector artists.
