Image Resolution: Why It Matters

Image resolution determines how sharp and detailed your images appear on screens and in print. Understanding resolution helps you:

  • Choose the right camera settings
  • Prepare images for different platforms
  • Know when AI upscaling can help
  • Avoid blurry prints and pixelated graphics
  • Key Terms Explained

    Pixels

A pixel is the smallest unit of a digital image. Every digital image is a grid of pixels. A 1920x1080 image has 1,920 pixels wide and 1,080 pixels tall = about 2 million pixels.

    Resolution (Pixel Dimensions)

The total number of pixels in width x height. Higher pixel dimensions = more detail.

    Megapixels (MP)

Total pixel count divided by one million. A 4000x3000 image = 12 megapixels.

    DPI (Dots Per Inch)

Used in printing. Tells the printer how many dots of ink to place per inch. Higher DPI = sharper prints.

  • 72 DPI — Screen/web standard
  • 150 DPI — Minimum for acceptable prints
  • 300 DPI — Professional print standard
  • 600 DPI — High-quality fine art prints
  • PPI (Pixels Per Inch)

Used for screens. Describes how many pixels display per inch on your monitor or phone.

  • Standard monitor: 72-96 PPI
  • Retina/HiDPI: 200-300+ PPI
  • Phone screens: 300-500+ PPI
  • DPI vs PPI: The Confusion

People often use DPI and PPI interchangeably, but they are different:

  • PPI = pixels on screen
  • DPI = dots of ink on paper
  • For practical purposes:

  • Web/digital: Only pixel dimensions matter (1920x1080, 1200x628, etc.)
  • Print: Both pixel dimensions AND DPI matter
  • Resolution for Different Uses

    Web & Social Media

Only pixel dimensions matter. DPI is irrelevant for screens.

  • Instagram: 1080x1080 (feed), 1080x1920 (story)
  • YouTube thumbnail: 1280x720
  • Website hero: 1920x1080
  • Blog image: 1200x630
  • Print

Both pixels AND DPI determine print quality.

  • Formula: Print size (inches) = Pixel dimensions / DPI
  • Example: 3000px wide / 300 DPI = 10-inch wide print
  • eCommerce

    Platforms specify minimum pixel dimensions:

  • Amazon: 1000px minimum (2000px for zoom)
  • Shopify: 2048x2048 recommended
  • How AI Upscaling Helps

When your image doesn't have enough pixels for your intended use, AI upscaling adds genuine detail:

    Quick Resolution Guide

Need it for web? → Check pixel dimensions only

Need it for print? → Pixels / 300 = max print size in inches

Not enough pixels? → AI upscale to 2x
